Chava Adams, The Ways They Learn, NYC

TN: Where are you from and which subjects do you tutor?

Chava: I’m from New York City and  tutor just about all subjects at the elementary to high school level. My specialty is working with students who have learning disorders or disabilities.

TN: How did you get involved with tutoring?

Chava: I have been tutoring younger students since I was in high school! I have been a NY certified teacher of students with disabilities since 2009.

TN: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a tutor?

Chava: I find it most rewarding when students show or tell that they have absorbed my positive values such as hard work, acceptance, and respect. It shows that amid all the hard academic work we do, I am succeeding in communicating what is really most important.

TN: What insight or tutoring tips would you like to share with other tutors?

Chava: I try to share tips from time to time on my blog at  http://waystheylearn.wordpress.com. Sometimes I neglect to post for a while, but I am planning to pick up the pace again and have a bunch of good ideas lines up. I think one of the most important things for tutors is to stay fresh – instead of getting discouraged when the going gets rough, look for new ideas, whether that means reading up on different techniques, buying some new materials, or thinking of new ways to use the things you already have. If you’re feeling enthusiastic about what you’re doing, the students will end up coming along for the ride.
